Folegandros is one of the quieter and more rugged islands of the Cyclades, prized for its unspoiled character rather than bustling resorts or nightlife. Towering sea cliffs, rocky hillsides, and crystal-clear coves define its landscape, while the island’s sparse vegetation and traditional stone terraces reflect centuries of farming in a dry Mediterranean climate. Compared with its famous neighbor Santorini, Folegandros offers a slower pace and a stronger sense of timeless island life.

The island’s greatest treasure is its hilltop Chora, considered one of the most beautiful villages in the Cyclades. Perched safely inland above the cliffs to protect it from pirate raids, Chora is a maze of narrow, whitewashed lanes that open unexpectedly into peaceful village squares shaded by trees and lined with small cafés. Above the village, the white Church of Panagia stands on the edge of the cliffs, reached by a winding zigzag path that rewards visitors with sweeping views across the Aegean Sea. With its dramatic scenery, traditional architecture, and relaxed atmosphere, Folegandros remains one of Greece’s most authentic and memorable island destinations.

Dramatic Cliffs

We had dinner at a restaurant downhill from Chora near where the Galileo was docked. The captain and three other officers were eating here, so it must be good . . . and it was! (2924)
