There are over 800 miles of hiking trails, including a segment of the Appalachian Trail. Being mountainous, most trails have significant elevation change. Bears, deer, and elk are plentiful, and many a traffic jam are caused by animal watching, so keep an eye open. In the spring, wildflowers are stunning, and the park is a visitor magnet in October for the autumn leaves.
