Delos

Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, a small, barren island in the Cyclades that was once a major religious and commercial center of the ancient world. According to mythology, it is the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and in antiquity it functioned as a sacred sanctuary and later a bustling trade hub under Athenian and Roman influence. Today, it is uninhabited except for caretakers and archaeologists, and visitors walk through an expansive open-air museum of marble ruins—temples, stoas, sanctuaries, and residential quarters—scattered across a sun-bleached landscape overlooking the Aegean. The silence of the island, combined with the scale of its ruins and the clarity of its coastal light, gives Delos an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
