Yes, another scenic road \u2014 ranch lands, aspen groves, and incredible views of my favorite range, the San Juan Mountains. I have drive the road twice, both times in September and from the two different directions. This post will describe access from the north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North access is 12 miles out of Ridgway on Hiway 62, itself a scenic drive with the San Juans to the left. Watch for the pull-out parking area on the left about 9 miles from Ridgway. It is worth the stop. The first three images in the gallery are views of the San Juan Mountain range from Hiway 62. The turn off to Last Dollar Road is another 2.4 miles over Dallas Divide at 8,800′. Watch for the sign labeled “Last Dollar”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LDR is rated as an “easy” drive on dirt roads that sometimes may be rutted. In general, any stock SUV will suffice, although after a rain, there are very slippery clay sections that may be a problem without a 4-wheel drive vehicle. My first drive was the same September that had the early snowstorm I encountered on the Kebler Pass Road<\/a>. Perhaps I was being very careful, or lucky, following tracks on the snow-covered trail, when I came upon an abandoned car that had slid off the road to my left. Eventually, the snow on LDR became less of a problem, and I was able to truly enjoy the drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a number of intersections along Last Dollar Road, and they can vary in clarity. While some key intersections may have signs, not every turn-off is well-marked. I cannot guarantee good Internet access so I recommend downloading an off-line map that may assist you in not taking a wrong turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LDR initially traverses ranch lands and then ascends through aspen groves to the highest elevation point of 10,600′ near the Alder Creek trailhead. From there the road twists and turns downhill with beautiful mountain views all the way. Towards the end of the trail, there is a residential area and finally, the Telluride Airport on your right as you come to the ending point at Hiway 145.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
