Animas Forks is an historic ghost town located in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, and is accessible only by appropriate vehicles over rugged roads and mountain passes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Animas Forks was established in the late 19th century, around 1873, primarily as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom. When silver and gold were discovered in the area, It served as an important hub for mining operations, with various mines, including the famous “Mineral Point” and “Animas Forks” mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The town began to decline in the early 1900s, with most mining operations ceasing by the 1920s. By the 1940s, Animas Forks was mostly abandoned as miners moved on to other areas with more lucrative opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At its peak, Animas Forks had a population of around 400 residents, with various amenities such as a post office, general store, and saloons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, Animas Forks is a well-preserved ghost town and is part of the larger network of old mining trails and operations. The area is popular for off-road vehicle enthusiasts, with several 4×4 trails leading to Animas Forks. Some sites within or near Animas Forks are in complete ruins, while there are a few buildings that are well-preserved. While there are no formal guides in the deserted town, there are information boards that provide context about the town’s history and mining operations.
